Failed Mail Merge: Error Message "Could not build data file"

If a user receives the following error message while attempting to perform a mail merge perform steps listed below 

"Application Error

Could not build data file.

The SQLSecurityCheck DWORD value does not exist in the registry for this user. This must be in place prior to executing a Microsoft Word mail merge. Please see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825765 for information on why you need this setting and how to apply this setting to your registry."

 

Revelvant Fix information in the KB Article is towards the bottom under "Workaround"

1. Start Registry Editor

 

2. Locate the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\Options

*Ignore the 15 and use the most recent version at time of writing it is version 16

 

3. Right click "Options" and choose "New" then "DWORD Value" 

 

4. Under name enter "SQLSecurityCheck"

 

5. Double the new entry and in the Value data box, type: 00000000

 

6. Hit Okay
