Mount Saint Mary College Virus Removal Policy

If a computer has a virus that is impeding it from connecting to the MSMC network, MSMC IT will perform our standard removal procedure in an attempt to remove the virus.

Since virus software can corrupt and often delete files stored on a computer, MSMC IT is not responsible for the loss of any data. The owner of the computer will sign a disclaimer stating this.  It is highly recommended that any important data files get backed-up prior to MSMC IT performing any virus removal procedures. The backup procedure is the responsibility of the computer owner.


  • No virus removal procedure is 100% guaranteed.  MSMC IT has seen that our standard removal procedure has a 90% success rate.
  • If the computer owner does not have a device to perform a reliable backup or simply does not know how, MSMC IT will perform a backup of the computer My Documents folder and will save a maximum of 8 GB of data.  Documents will be backed up, but depending on the size, we MAY NOT be able to save and restore pictures and music (higher data content).
  • The policy of the college is to ensure each computer connected to the campus network have a virus program installed that is current and up-to-date.  If a virus program is not installed or is not up to date, MSMC IT will install and configure the standard college approved program.
  • As a final precaution, we will ensure the computer is currently up-to-date.
