Save paper----save the planet. A new print and copy management system is coming to MSMC – watch for details after Spring Break.

Saving The Environment, One Printout/Tree At A Time -
the Papercut
 Print and Copy Management System

Each year approximately 1,250,000 pages are printed and copied on the library’s printers and copiers at Mount Saint Mary College. That's a lot of trees and energy used and we all can help to reduce this. The PaperCut™ print and copy management system is being piloted during the spring of 2011, and PaperCut™ will be used to help Mount Saint Mary College reduce its carbon footprint, save trees and reduce energy consumption.

Each semester students will be assigned a print and copy quota that should cover the normal printing and copying needs of students in connection with their academic program. For the first semester the quotas will be:

  • Black and white printing and copying will cost $.05 for single-sided
  • Black and white printing and copying will cost $.08 for two-sided duplex
  • Color printing and copying will cost $.10 for single-sided
  • Color printing and copying will cost $.18 for double-sided

The quota is based on data collected in the 2009- 2010 academic year and from peer institutions and should be sufficient for all printing supporting the academic program. Quotas will be restarted between semesters. The data for each semester will enable us to fine tune the quota system for the following semester. Individuals who go beyond their quota will have to purchase additional print units.

PaperCut™  lets you view the history of all things you printed, and displays various details about the printouts. Your print usage is summarized in graphical form and approximations of environmental impact.
